AI search optimisation (GEO and AEO)

AI search optimisation, covering GEO and AEO, is about making your content clear, accurate and easy for AI search and answer engines to find, understand and cite. It is an evolving area, so nobody can guarantee mentions or citations. I focus on the fundamentals and measure results openly in the AI Search Lab.

Questions are put to tools such asChatGPTPerplexityGeminiClaudeGoogle AI OverviewsMicrosoft Copilot

How an AI answer is checked. Results differ between tools and between runs.

One question. Many tools. Many different answers.

Your customers are already asking AI.

Buyers now ask for recommendations, comparisons and plain explanations in a chat window. The answer they read may never send them to a results page.

“Who should I trust for this?”

“Which option is right for me?”

“Which providers specialise in this?”

Does this sound like your brand?

If any of these feel familiar, an AI search readiness review is the place to start.

What do AI tools say?

You want to know what ChatGPT, Perplexity or Gemini say about you or your brand.

Wrong or missing

AI tools describe you wrongly, or not at all.

Details that differ

Your details differ between your website, LinkedIn and other listings.

Crawl access unclear

You are not sure search and AI crawlers can reach your pages.

No baseline

You have never recorded what AI tools say, so there is nothing to compare with.

Guesswork

You would rather measure it than guess.

Where your brand can show up

People now ask AI tools for recommendations, comparisons and plain explanations. The answer they read may never send them to a search results page.

Some tools search the web while they answer and show their sources. Others answer mainly from what they learned in training. Either way, they can leave you out or describe you wrongly.

What the review looks at

  • Whether each tool mentions you
  • Whether it links to your website
  • Whether the description is correct

The tools differ, and so do their answers.

How it works

A fixed method you can repeat, so any change shows up against your own baseline.

Ask.

A fixed list of questions about you or your brand is put to each AI tool.

Record.

For every answer I note three things: were you mentioned, was your website linked, and was the description correct.

MentionedLinkedDescribed correctly

Fix the basics.

Answer-first page structure, consistent names, profiles and descriptions, and crawl access for search and AI crawlers.

Answer-first pagesConsistent namesProfiles and descriptionsCrawl access

Repeat.

The same questions are asked again, on the same tools, because AI answers change from one run to the next.

Compare.

Results are compared with the first baseline. A change after an update does not prove the update caused it.

What changes on your pages

Small, honest changes that make a page easier for a person or an AI tool to understand at a glance.

Before

The answer is buried.

After

The answer comes first.

Answer-first pages

Each key page opens with a clear statement of what it is and who it is for.

Consistent details

Your name, description and services read the same on your site, LinkedIn and other listings.

Structured data that matches

Schema markup describes what is already visible on the page, and nothing else.

Crawl access

Search and AI crawlers can reach the pages you want read, and are kept out of the ones you do not.

See the signals that matter

Every review ends with a record you can read at a glance: whether each tool mentioned you, linked to your site and described you correctly, and how that moves when the same questions are asked again.

A change after an update does not prove the update caused it. That is why the comparison is always against your own baseline.

Frequently asked questions

Straight answers on how AI search work is done and what it can promise.

What is AI search?

Tools such as ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude, Google AI Overviews and Microsoft Copilot answer questions directly, often with a short summary and a few sources, instead of only listing links. Some search the web while they answer and show where the information came from. Others answer mainly from what they learned in training. Either way, a buyer can form an opinion about your brand without ever visiting a results page.

What are generative engine optimisation (GEO) and answer engine optimisation (AEO)?

GEO and AEO are names for the practice of making your brand and website easy for AI models and answer engines to find, understand and cite. Where classic SEO targets traditional results pages, GEO and AEO focus on engines that write an answer. The terms overlap and the field is still settling, so I describe the work by what is actually done: clear pages, consistent details, crawl access and measurement.

Is this different from SEO?

It builds on SEO. Clear pages, consistent details and crawl access matter for both. The difference is how results are checked: besides reading rankings, I ask AI tools the same questions repeatedly and record what comes back. Good technical SEO and clear content are the base, and AI search work adds a way to see how your brand is described.

Which AI tools do you check?

The set is agreed with you. It usually includes ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude, Google AI Overviews and Microsoft Copilot, which is up to six tools. Each one behaves differently, so each is recorded separately rather than blended into a single number.

How do you measure AI search visibility?

With a fixed list of questions about you or your brand, asked on each tool more than once. For every answer I record three things: whether you were mentioned, whether your website was linked, and whether the description was correct. The first run is your baseline, and later runs are compared with it, so you can see movement against your own starting point.

Why do the answers differ each time?

AI answers are generated fresh each time, and they can change with the wording of the question, the version of the tool and the settings used. That is why the same questions are asked several times. One answer proves very little, while a pattern across runs says more.

Can you guarantee my brand will appear in ChatGPT or Perplexity?

No. Nobody controls what an AI tool says, so I do not promise mentions, citations or recommendations. What I can do is make your content clear and accurate, keep your details consistent, check that crawlers can reach your pages, and measure what changes. The result is a clearer picture, not a guarantee.

How long until I see a change?

I cannot give a date. AI tools update at different times, some do not refresh their knowledge often, and answers vary between runs. The repeat runs show whether anything has moved, and I will tell you plainly if it has not.

What do you change on my website?

Typically: page openings that state the answer first, consistent names and descriptions across your site and profiles, structured data that matches what is visible on the page, and crawl access for search and AI crawlers. I do not add claims that are not true, or markup that does not match the page. The list of changes is agreed with you before anything is touched.

Can I see the method working?

Yes. The AI Search Lab applies the same method to my own name, with the data published as it is collected. It shows the baseline, the repeat runs and the limits of what can be concluded, including when a change cannot be explained.

What do you need from me to start?

Your name or brand name, your website address and links to your LinkedIn and other profiles. I will propose the list of questions and the tools to check, and we agree it before the baseline run.

Send your name or brand and your website address, and I will set up a baseline review of how AI tools describe you.
